2nd Newsletter - Coalition for a Baruch Plan for AI

Dear CBPAI newsletter subscribers, partners, team, advisors, working group members,

The last 2 months have seen a seismic shift and acceleration in our AI predicament, turning the next few years into the most critical and consequential of human history.

We stand on the brink of an irreversible slide towards AIs capable enough to subjugate or annihilate humanity, or to enable one or more entities to do so.

While it may be already too late, we can still prevail, and realize AI's astounding opportunities, but only if we come together skilfully like never before.

The acceleration of AI innovation and investments, the entrenchment of a China-US winner-take-all, reckless, AI arms race-to-the-brink towards Superintelligence dragging along their allies and leading firms, and the election of Donald Trump with its ally Musk, have radically modified the strategic landscape of the global governance of AI, and radically increased its scope and urgency.

After deep soul searching, and intense discussions and analysis among our expanding team or advisors and working groups, we concluded that It is ever more urgent to create a strong global governance for AI that is timely, strong, and inclusive enough to have any rational hope we can steer away the immense risks to human safety and concentration of power.

Find our updated vision for a sane global governance of AI in our 2,000-words Executive Summary of a Coalition for a Baruch Plan for AI webpage

In addition, we have produced a late-draft 500-words Open Call of a Coalition for a Baruch Plan for AI a 23,000-words Case for a Coalition for a Baruch Plan for AI PDF, that includes both the Open Call and Executive Summary, and much more. Next Thursday, December 5th, 2024, the Open Call will be available for undersigning accompanied by a video, and the Case will be published as a pre-print, and widely shared on social media.

As part of our new strategy, in the ensuing weeks, we'll start sending first formal versions of our Open Letter to President-Elect Trump and President XI and Open Letter to Heads of States calling on them to formally endorse, fund or take over our initiative to build the powerful global intergovernmental organizations we need for AI, skillfully and with the utmost urgently. These open letters will be addressed and routed to their key advisors and security/AI agencies, also through our expanding network, and will include an expanding set of general and country-specific supporting information supported by ever more experts.

If you appreciate what we are doing, we'd be delighted if you could help by:

  • 1) Providing feedback and suggestions (via email, audio call or on-doc) on one or more of the late drafts of those three documents, starting from the Open Call and then the Executive Summary. (Find all three docs in the late gdoc draft of our Case for a Coalition for a Baruch Plan for AI.) If fitting you expertise, please contribute to less developed or crucial chapters of the Case are available in an Appendix to the Case (live draft gdoc) (which will be published later)

  • 2) State your interest to:

    • be included as undersigner of the Open Call

    • be included as contributor or acknowledged expert for one or more of those three documents,

    • be included as advisor or member of our working groups if you have relevant skills.

  • 3) Introduce us so we can present our case for superpowers or our case for non-superpower states

  • 4) Introduce us so we can present our case for prospective donors funders

Please, contact us at cbpai@trustlesscomputing.org.

PS: We have decided to move the 1st Summit to next April 17-18, 2025 due to lack of funding, and renewed focus on direct lobbying of top public officials and smaller virtual events in the next months.

Warm Regards,

The Coalition for a Baruch Plan for AI
